Inspirational Breakfast with Esther Higham
This week on Inspirational Breakfast, the issue of “institutional racism” was discussed for several reasons…
On Tuesday (20 April) – a BBC Panorama Report accused the church of England’s treatment of black and ethnic vicars to be “not fit for purpose”
On Wednesday (21 April) the news that the former police officer who killed George Floyd was guilty of murder was covered – But what does that mean for race relations in the USA?
And Friday (23 April) marked the Stephen Lawrence Day – a national moment to reflect on the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence in London in 1993, and the tireless campaigning his mother Doreen has done over the last 28 years for justice for her son.
The question we need to ask ourselves is – nearly three decades on why are we still talking about race? Why is institutional racism still an issue – not only in our justice system but even in our national church?
Bishop Dr Joe Aldred – theologian, church leader and government adviser spoke to Premier’s Esther Higham about this subject.
