Time to hang up your leggings?

American Christian blogger Veronica Partridge announced recently that she plans to abstain from wearing tightly fitted leggings. And her blog post went viral among Christians and non-Christians alike, gaining her both praise and scorn.

Her decision came after her husband admitted that tight leggings or “yoga pants” as they’re called in the States, can cause his eyes to stray, even though he tries not to look.

“When I walk into a place and there are women wearing yoga pants everywhere, it’s hard to not look. I try not to, but it’s not easy”.

So I was interested to ask you – my Woman to Woman listeners – for your response.

Your reactions ranged from Alison who said “most women look awful in leggings so I am surprised anyone is having lustful feelings” to Lyn who took the opportunity to declare her love of leggings to the world! Clare was concerned that people might think we Christians are “weirdo extremists” if we give up wearing leggings, concluding that this lady’s husband probably regrets opening his mouth now that the story has gone viral.

A handful of male respondents supported the move, with one saying “every little helps”, but another man said it depends whether the woman in question has nice legs as to whether it would lead him into temptation!

What do you think – is this a positive way to promote modesty or a bit extreme?

Is this a way of ‘victim shaming’ women when in fact it’s the men who should be working on their lustful thoughts? Or just a practical step to prevent people staring at your body?
